When Tigers Roared

Mark Johnson
Head Coach

Mark Johnson is in his seventh season of directing the Fort Hays State University men's basketball program after being named head coach on July 13, 2001. Johnson is the 14th men's basketball coach in the school's 89 years of collegiate basketball. Last year, he lead the Tigers to a conference postseason tournament appearance in their first season as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

During the 2005-06 season, Johnson guided the Tigers to their best record since he began his stint as head coach of the program. The Tigers went 27-4 overall and won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship with an 18-1 conference record. The Tigers reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional before falling to Northern State (S.D.). FHSU was ranked #1 in the nation for two weeks during the 2005-06 season. He was named RMAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. With the regular season conference championship, Johnson’s teams had reached the RMAC Tournament in each year of his coaching tenure. Johnson’s teams have reached the 20-win plateau three out of the six seasons he has been head coach.

In 2004-05, he guided the Tigers to an 18-10 record, going a perfect 15-0 at home. Johnson led the Tigers to a 17-11 mark in 2003-04. In 2002-03, he led FHSU to a 23-8 mark and a runner-up finish at the RMAC Tournament. The Tigers earned a NCAA II North Central Regional berth that season, falling in the first round to South Dakota State. In his first season at the helm of the Tiger basketball program, Johnson led the Tigers to a 21-7 record.

Prior to being named the head coach, Johnson served as the Tigers' assistant coach from 1996 until the 2001-02 season. He served as the Tigers' interim coach following Gary Garner's departure to Southeast Missouri State University prior to the start of the 1997-98 season. Before coming to FHSU, Johnson was the assistant coach at Phillips University, Enid, Okla.

He coached the 1994-95 season at Labette Community College under Rand Chappell and then moved along with Chappell to Phillips University. Following his playing career at Pittsburg State University he spent two seasons as the Gorillas' graduate assistant.

Following a senior season that garnered him All-America, All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference honors at Omaha Millard South High School, he played basketball at Kilgore Junior College, Kilgore, Texas. His sophomore year he was selected to the Texas Eastern Athletic Conference Academic Team.

Johnson played two seasons at Pittsburg State University where he earned Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors twice and All-South Region honors as a senior.

Johnson received his associate degree from Kilgore Junior College in 1991, bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State in 1993 and a master's degree from Pittsburg State in 1994. He is married to the former Kenda Pruter of Natoma, Kan. They have two children, daughter Carly and son Truman.

Jeremy Brown
Assistant Coach

Jeremy Brown is in his second season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Fort Hays State men's basketball team. Brown is no stranger to the Tiger program as he served as both a student assistant from 1998-2000 and a graduate assistant from 2001-2003. A native of Mulvane, Kansas, Brown played two years of basketball at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas from 1996-1998.

Brown was an assistant coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, from 2004-2005 and helped coach the team to a top 25 ranking two years in a row. While with the Bulldogs, he helped coach one all-region and six all-league players and helped guide the team to an NCAA tournament appearance during the 2004-2005 season.

Brown earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from FHSU in 2001 and a master's degree in Sports Administration in 2003.
