Who is the favorite?
Entrance note: UCO enters like “Remember the Titans” with a chant before they come onto the court for the final time: “We are the Bronchos, the mighty, mighty Bronchos.” I don’t know if I have seen that before.
FHSU band in full force: good to see the Tiger band make the trip.
FHSU starters: Jake Sims, LaTravis Turner, Rob Igbawua, Tyrone Evans and Ryan Herrman
Fort Hays and Central Oklahoma each play contrasting styles, so it is difficult to look at metrics like scoring offense and scoring defense to find a gauge on how the two teams play. We can do that by offensive and defensive efficiency, tempo-free stats that rate by number of possessions in a game rather than a total game.
(For example, a team that scores 80 points on 60 possessions is a better team than one than tallies 90 points on 80 possessions. Pace is eliminated through these numbers, available at kenpom.com). UCO has a nationally ranked offense, but they play very fast, so how much better/worse is their offense than FHSU?
Possessions per game:
FHSU: 66.3
UCO: 76.5
Offensive efficiency (possessions/scoring offense*100):
FHSU: 103.7 (per 100 possessions, the Tigers average 103.7 points. The average is generally 100, so FHSU’s offense is above average)
UCO: 109.2
Defensive efficiency: (possessions/scoring defense*100)
FHSU: 96.9 (per 100 possessions, the Tigers give up 96.9 points. Generally, 100 is also the average here)
UCO: 95.2
Other key statistics:
Effective field goal shooting percentage (a combination of 2 and 3-pointers that weighs a 3-ptr more than a 2-ptr)
UCO: 51.8
FHSU: 51.3
3-pt shooting (a gauge of perimeter offense)
UCO: 35.2
FHSU: 38.8
2-pt shooting (a gauge of interior offense)
UCO: 51.1
FHSU: 47.2
3-pt shooting defense
UCO: 33.3
FHSU: 35.3
2-pt shooting defense:
UCO: 50.1
FHSU: 45.2
The region teams in 2-pt shooting percentage:
1. St. Edwards’ 54.1
2. St. Mary’s 53.2
3. Northwest Mo. 53.1
4. SBU 51.5
5. UCO 51.1
6. West Texas 50.7
7. Tarleton 48.2
8. Fort Hays 47.2
Moral of the stats: Well, let’s let coach Johnson explain from the press conference last night:
“When we shoot the 3, we are a pretty good team,” he said.
We’ll find out next. Tipoff in a few minutes….
