Tiger softball teams goes 1-1 in Arizona tourney

PHOENIX -- The Fort Hays State University softball team went 1-1 at the Sports Division II Leadoff Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., on Thursday.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Adrian Mohr improved to 2-0 and lowered her ERA to 3.50 with a two-hit, seven-inning shutout in a 4-1 win against Central Washington. Senior Anna Herl and junior Terra Fraser went 2-for-3 and sophomore Jessika Anastos drove in all four runs. Anastos has driven in 13 runs in nine games this season for the 7-2 Tigers.

In Game 2, Fort Hays lost to St. Mary's (Texas), ranked No. 9 in Div. II, 7-3. Herl and junior Hallie McMillen homered for the Tigers and freshman Kayla Rupa (2-1) took the loss after she surrendered seven runs on 10 hits. Malissa Magee, the reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week, struck out 14 batters in the win.

Fort Hays faces No. 6 Humboldt State University (Calif.) today before they move to bracket play in the evening.
