Tiger softball team goes 2-2 in Texas; Baseball loses three in Arkansas

The Fort Hays State University softball team went 2-2 at the West Texas A&M Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers lost their first two games in pool play to Cameron University on Friday before they came back to win both of their contests on Saturday.
Cameron won 8-0 and 12-7 on Friday. In the second game, sophomore Jessika Anastos continued her dominating season with a grand slam. Anastos, a Broomfield, Col. native, is batting .500 (30-for-60) with eight homers, 23 RBI and 21 runs scored in 19 games this year. Her slugging percentage is 1.050.
On Saturday, the Tigers defeated University of Nebraska-Kearney 9-2 and beat Mesa State 8-3. Against Kearney, Fort Hays scored eight runs in the second inning on a pair of two-run singles by senior Alyson Garmatz and Anastos. Freshman Kayla Rupa (3-3) allowed two runs in a complete game. Senior lefthander Emily Rockefeller (5-2) pitched five shutout innings of relief to earn the win against Mesa State.
The softball team will be at home Friday and Saturday versus Oklahoma Panhandle State. Games start at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Fort Hays baseball team, 2-6 this season, lost all three games against Ouachita Baptist University (Ark.), the No. 3 team in Div. II. In the first game, Fort Hays lost 2-1 when the offense had just four hits. Freshman Chase Schippers, a Thomas More Prep-Marian graduate, hit a homer and went 1-for-3.
Junior Eric Gilliland (0-1) pitched 6Ôªø2âÑ3 innings and allowed an earned run. Fort Hays dropped the second contest 11-3. Junior Sean Bartholomew went 2Ôªø1âÑ3 innings and allowed four runs. Senior Dusty Washburn homered in the loss. The Tigers lost their final contest 4-2.
