Tiger softball team drops pair

TOPEKA -- The Fort Hays State University softball team dropped its first two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games when the Tigers lost twice to Washburn University on Sunday. The Tigers lost 5-0 and 5-4 in eight innings and fell to 15-13 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. They have lost three in a row and four of their past five.
In the first game, freshman Kayla Rupa (4-5) took the loss after she pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs. The Tigers had seven hits but left four on base.
In the second contest, Washburn broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth on a Tiger error and a Lady Blue single. Senior Emily Rockefeller (6-3) took the loss after she pitched 5Ôªø2รขÑ3 innings of relief and permitted just one earned run in relief of sophomore Jessica Hamilton (two innings, three earned runs).
Sophomore Jessika Anastos led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, RBI and a double. Anastos has posted astronomical numbers this season, hitting .526 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 78 at-bats.
Fort Hays returns home Wednesday to start a span of four doubleheaders in four days at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will play West Texas A&M in a noon doubleheader Wednesday.
