On Tuesday afternoon, the NCAA provided more proof of Fort Hays State University sophomore catcher's Jessika Anastos' unbelievable season. On Tuesday night, Anastos continued her amazing hitting with two strong games in road wins, 6-3 and 3-2, over Newman University in Wichita.
Anastos, who batted .778 in six home games last week, led the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in several numbers, including batting average and on-base percentage, when the conference released its statistics on Monday afternoon.
On Tuesday, for the first time this season, the NCAA published its nationwide statistics for Div. I and Div. II softball. Anastos' .573 batting average leads both Div. I and Div. II players, while Div. I's Northwestern (Ill.) University's Tammy Williams ranks second with a .535 mark. No other Div. II player is hitting better than .520.
Anastos' .611 on-base percentage leads Div. II, while her 1.063 slugging percentage stands second to St. Cloud (Minn.) State's Jenny Gensch's 1.112 mark. Anastos also stands 11th in runs per game and 14th in homers per game.
Anastos, whom West Texas A&M head coach Kevin Blaskowski called an "upper echelon" player and Cameron (Okla.) University head coach Richie Nye referred to as a "tough out," reached base 16 straight times in six games against West Texas and Cameron last week. She didn't get out in the final four games of the series.
She upped that streak to 19 straight plate appearances without making an out in the first game against Newman. She went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Anastos reached on an error in her third at-bat. Freshman Kayla Rupa (7-6) pitched a complete game for the victory.
Anastos made an out in her first at-bat of the second game, her first out since the second contest against West Texas A&M last Wednesday, when she grounded out to second base. She finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. The two-hit game extended Anastos' hitting streak to 12 games and gave her nine straight multi-hit contests. Anastos and senior second baseman Emily Herl (2-for-4) had four of the Tigers' five hits and drove in both of the runs.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Hamilton, struggling in recent games, pitched five shutout innings and moved to 3-3 this season. It was her first scoreless start since March 1 and her third one overall.
Fort Hays (21-15) will play at Missouri Southern this weekend.
