Anastos sets homer record in doubleheader sweep; Tigers lose Saturday
3/28/2008
On Friday afternoon, sophomore Jessika Anastos broke the Fort Hays State University home run record and led the Tigers to two wins, 6-5 and 9-1, against Missouri Southern State University.
The next day, Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University continually pitched around her and the Tigers lost two games, 10-2 and 5-1.
In the first doubleheader, Anastos continued her remarkable season with a two-run homer to center field in the second game.
The sophomore, who also returned to catcher after several weeks as the designated player because of a shoulder injury, has 12 homers, one more than Suzanne Kerr and Kristy Roethemeyer hit in 1999 and 2002, respectively. She finished the series with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Anastos, the nation's leading hitter with a .549 average, received the Barry Bonds treatment in the doubleheader against SBU. She went 0-for-1 with five walks and saw her 14-game hitting streak come to an end. The offense suffered with Anastos being pitched around. It was the first time since March 19 the squad scored fewer than three runs. Pitching-wise, freshman Kayla Rupa went 1-0, while sophomore Jessica Hamilton was 0-1 and senior Emily Rockefeller went 1-1 in the four games.
Fort Hays is now 23-17 overall.
