The Fort Hays State University baseball team improved to 8-0 on the season with a conference sweep over the weekend of Missouri Western State University.
After taking a pair of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games from the Griffons on Friday at Larks Park, the Tigers swept two games Saturday, winning the opener 3-2 in 10 innings and 17-0 in the second game.
In the opener, the Tigers rallied for their seventh come-from-behind victory of the year. Missouri Western got a pinch-hit homer off senior closer Mat Atkinson in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead, but Fort Hays got a run on senior Ryan Majercik's two-out single to force extra innings.
The Tigers won it in the 10th on freshman Kelton Rule's bunt with runners on first and third.
Atkinson pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Freshman starter Chase Newman allowed one run in six innings.
In Game 2, Tiger starter Matt Augustine pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Sloan Soulia hit pair of two-run doubles, and junior Kyle Stacken added three-run homer, his second of the year. Majercik and sophomore Nash Smith each had two RBIs.
Fort Hays will play host to 10th-ranked Emporia State this weekend in a four-game series at Larks Park. They will play a 3 p.m. single game on Friday, a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a noon single game on Sunday.
