Tigers beat up at Pitt State

PITTSBURG -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team is still in the hunt for a berth in the conference's postseason tourney, But Sunday's doubleheader loss didn't help the Tigers.
After winning the first two games in their Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series with Pittsburg State University, the Tigers were thumped by the Gorillas on Sunday, losing 12-3 and 20-1.
Fort Hays (31-17 overall, 19-12 MIAA) is fourth in the conference standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The Tigers close out the season with a four-game series starting Friday against Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo.
In Sunday's opener, Pittsburg State broke open a 2-2 tie with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Fort Hays senior starter Bobby Lewton (6-4) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits in 4Ôªø1Ñ3 innings.
Senior Tyler Konrade singled and doubled and drove in a run and senior Luke Dreiling hit his 11th homer for Fort Hays.
The Tigers absorbed their worst loss of the season in Game 2, Previously, the Tigers lost by 11 runs in their season opener, 12-1 at Mesa State (Colo.) College on Feb. 16. The most runs the Tigers had given up was in an 18-6 loss to University of Central Missouri in Hays on April 14.
In Sunday's second game, Pittsburg State (22-25, 13-15) scored nine runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead. The Gorillas added four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth, then added two in the sixth.
The loss went to Tiger freshman starter Matt Augustine, the first of five Tiger pitchers. Augustine (4-1) allowed six runs on seven hits in 2Ôªø1Ñ3 innings.
Fort Hays avoided a shutout with a run in the seventh on freshman Justin Groff's RBI triple.
