Fort Hays softball team splits pair

DURANT, Okla. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team finished tournament action Sunday with a win and a loss.
After splitting their two games Saturday, the Tigers started Sunday with a 5-4, nine-inning win over St. Mary's (Texas), before falling 5-3 to No 8 ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State.
In the game against St. Mary's (5-10), Fort Hays put up two runs in the seventh to force a 4-4 tie, and broke the tie with a run in the top half of the ninth.
Senior Hallie McMillen hit an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Sara Tani from third for the go-ahead run.
Tiger junior starter Adrian Mohr lasted just 2 1/3 innings before being replaced by sophomore Kayla Rupa, who finished the game for the win.
The single in the ninth was McMillen's only hit of the game. Freshman Rachel Gemmill finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Against Southeastern Oklahoma (20-3), Fort Hays (11-7) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but Southeastern Oklahoma came back with a run in the second, one in the fourth and three in the fifth. Rupa (5-5) lasted 4 2/3 innings before sophomore Erin Kinsey finished the game. Freshman Cortney Brown drove in all three runs for the Tigers with a three-run homer in the second.
The Tigers will be in Pittsburg this weekend for action. They will face Drury on Friday at 3 p.m.
