Tiger softball 1-1 in MIAA first day

5/7/2010

OVERLAND PARK -- The Fort Hays softball team split its first two games Thursday in the first day of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.

The Tigers (29-20), seeded fifth in the tourney, defeated No. 4 seed University of Central Missouri, 6-0 before falling to top-seeded Emporia State University, 3-2.

The Tigers now face elimination, and were to take on No. 6 seed Northwest Missouri State University at 11 a.m. today.

In the game against Central, Kayla Rupa pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five. Freshman Maddie Holub had a two-run double and in the second and a two-run home run in the fourth, driving in four of the Tigers' six runs.

The Tigers were the only MIAA team to beat No. 17 Emporia State during the regular season, taking three from the Hornets, but Tiger miscues in the first inning allowed the Hornets to take a 2-0 lead Thursday. Fort Hays battled back from a 3-0 hole in the fifth inning on a line drive by Holub that was dropped by the Hornets' left fielder. Holub pitched the complete game, giving up two runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts. She is 13-11 on the season.
