The Fort Hays State University softball team dropped a pair of chilly games Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium, losing 2-1 and 10-8 to Northwest Missouri State University.

Senior Kayla Rupa (7-8) went the distance in game 1 for the Tigers, giving up seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Northwest Missouri State sophomore Jenna Creger gave up one run on five hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.

Sophomore Maddie Holub got things going for the Tigers in the bottom of the first. Holub, a former standout at Thomas More Prep-Marian, sent a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right-center to make it 1-0.

Northwest Missouri State tied it with a run in the fourth inning and scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth.

"We're just not hitting right now," FHSU coach Julie LeMaire said. "And for us to try to rely on one hit here or there isn't working out for us."

In the second game, Northwest Missouri State jumped on Holub for three runs in the first inning. The visitors picked up another run in the fourth inning when senior Kit Daugherty scored on a double by sophomore Hailee Hendricks.

Likewise, in the third, Northwest Missouri State (15-7 overall, 4-0 MIAA) picked up its fifth run when senior Dacey Hassey scored from second on a deep fly from sophomore Rachael Schmitz.

But Fort Hays (12-12, 0-4) showed some grit, getting after Bearcat sophomore pitcher Morgan Brunmeier in the Tiger half of the fourth, banging out three straight doubles, then a single, scoring three times.

After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, the Tigers kept up the pressure, with an extra-base error by the Bearcat first baseman, two singles and a double for three run to take the first lead of the game at 6-5.

The Bearcats tried to get a little something going in the sixth, but sputtered, then gave up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead.

But like a 15-handicapper in golf who plays great for most of a round but seems to have a blowup hole at an inopportune time, the Tigers let the Bearcats blow up in their last at-bat. Holub (5-4) got the first batter to pop out third. But Hendricks doubled, Holub hit senior Kristen Hessel, then the 5-foot-3 Hassey made her pay for it with a three-run blast that put the Bearcats up for good, 10-8,

"We can't be walking batters, and hitting batters, and at the same time not producing on our end," LeMaire said. That's just not how we win games."
