FHSU tennis sees season end at MIAA tournament

4/26/2009

By The Hays Daily News

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Fort Hays State University tennis team's season came to an end after just one dual Saturday at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.

The Tigers lost 5-0 to Northwest Missouri State University, and were scheduled to compete in Saturday's consolation semifinals, but rain forced the cancellation of the entire backside of the bracket at the Plaza Tennis Center. Only the two championships semifinals and final round are scheduled to be played today.

Freshmen Brittney Shea and Amanda Henkel were the only two Tiger singles to have matches on record. Shea lost 6-0, 6-0 to Northwest Missour's Lina Gomez, and Henkel fell 6-3, 6-1 to Jordan Lipira. The Tigers' three doubles teams were swept, 8-1, 8-0, 8-1. Once a team is down 5-0, play ends.

Fort Hays finished its regular season 8-10 and finished seventh in the MIAA regular season.

Tiger coach Brian Flax announced the signing this week of two true freshman. Laura Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Brianna Watkins of McCook, Neb. will join an already young Tiger squad.

Johnson holds a career record of 37-10 in high school and is 6-0 this season. She is ranked No. 24 in the USTA Colorado girls' division, and ranked 83rd in the Intermountain Division (Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Montana). Watkins has a career record of 59-32 in McCook, and a 23-2 record in her senior season. The two are in addition to Parker, Colo. native Melissa Skoriva, an early signee for the program, who was a runner-up finisher in the Colorado Class 5A state tourney.
