Baseball isn't the only sport with rain delays.

The Fort Hays State University women's tennis team won 8-1 over Hastings (Neb.) College in Saturday's season opener at the FHSU courts. But first, the Tiger players had to work for 2 hours drying off the courts from overnight rain to make them playable.

Fort Hays started out by sweeping in doubles action, and then won all but one singles match.

"Kind of started slow, doubles-wise," Flax said. "Kids elevated, took control of their matches."

Flax speculated that the rain delay had the Tigers off their form in the early going.

"It was just kind of out of sync," Flax said. "They did (adjust), that's the bottom line."

Freshman Laura Johnson won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and freshman Melissa Skovira was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 2. Sophomore Kelsey Bigando won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, while at No. 4, sophomore Krista Lindsey won 7-5, 6-2.

The lone Tiger loss came at No. 5 singles, with sophomore Kayla Jarvis falling, 6-2, 1-6, 8-6.

At No. 6 singles, freshman Brianna Watkins won 6-3, 6-3, and sophomore Brittney Shea won 8-1 at No. 7. Sophomore Valerie Harris won 8-2 at No. 8.

In doubles, Johnson and Skovira won 8-4 at No. 1, while Bigando and Lindsey were 8-3 winners at No. 2. Watkins and Jarvis won 8-4 at No. 3, while Harris and Shea won 8-1 at No. 4 doubles.

Normally, singles and doubles action don't extend to that many matches, but Flax had a chance to get more players court time while showing off his depth.

"We'll be able to handle injuries and sickness better than in the past," Flax said.

Fort Hays returns to action Friday in Lindsborg, when the Tigers take part in the Bethany College tournament.
