The Tigers lost their fifth straight on Friday, but Fort Hays State University tennis coach Brian Flax was encouraged by what he saw at the FHSU courts.
"As a team, I thought we played pretty well today," Flax said after his Tigers lost 6-3 to Newman University.
Junior Brittney Shea and sophomore Amy Guilliams provided the Tigers their three wins. They teamed up to win No. 3 doubles, 8-3, then Shea won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) and Williams won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
"It was good to see my No. 3 doubles team get a win," Flax said. "They've had some real close matches.
"I know they're real excited about going into the offseason, and getting a big win, to remember that," he added.
Fort Hays' No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Melissa Skovira and freshman Megan Quinley lost 8-2, and sophomore Lauren Johnson and freshman Zoie Young lost 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Skovira lost to Newman senior Laryssa Ferreira -- a transfer last year from Wichita State University -- at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Johnson lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Quinley fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Young lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4 singles.
Friday's dual was the last action of the fall for Fort Hays (1-5), which does have its second annual alumni match on Saturday.
"Overall, the brightest spot was the tremendous effort the kids gave today," Flax said. "Unfortunately, we didn't get a win, but I really like what I saw out there today."
