Tigers headed to national meet

3/13/2008

By The Hays Daily News

With Friday's preliminaries of the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, Fort Hays State University junior sprinter Bryan Haynes will kick off the Tigers' representation at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships.

The national meet is at Minnesota State University-Mankato on Friday and Saturday and the Tigers have two athletes competing.

Haynes will compete in both sprinting events while senior Brady Maska will compete in the shot put Saturday.

Haynes, a Peoria, Ariz., native and a member of the Tiger football team as a kick returner/wide receiver, has a best time in the 60-meters this season of 6.84 seconds. His best mark in the 200 was 21.88 seconds.

Haynes finished second twice in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships last week in Joplin, Mo. Haynes finished second behind Emporia State and former Minneapolis prep standout Kenton Lonberger in both events.

With a season-best toss of 56-11Ôªø1รขÑ4, Maska qualified for nationals in early February with his gold-winning performance at the University of Central Missouri Relays.

Maska, a Hays High graduate and Barton County Community College transfer, finished second at last week's MIAA Championships. Both Maska and Haynes were named MIAA Athletes of the Week at least once this season.
