MANKATO, Minn. -- Having the sixth best time after Friday's preliminaries in the 200-meter dash, Fort Hays State University junior sprinter Bryan Haynes bettered his finish Saturday, and turned it into a golden performance.
Haynes claimed the NCAA Div. II Indoor Track & Field 200-meter dash title at Myers Field House on Saturday. Haynes, running in the outside lane of the first heat, ran 21.78, just ahead of runner-up Desmond Jackson of Abilene Christian (21.80) for the gold medal.
Jackson was in the second heat, along with Emporia State University standout Kenton Lonberger, who beat Haynes at last week's Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.
"It was a very pleasant surprise," Tiger coach Dennis Weber said. "In that 200, everybody was so closely bunched up in the prelims. He was right there with two other guys."
Haynes, also a member of the Tiger football team and a transfer from Div. I University of Massachusetts, becomes the fourth individual indoor champion in Fort Hays history. He joins former Tiger Casey Seyfert, who won the shot put twice, and Maisha Prewitt, who won the only women's title, in the 60-meter hurdles.
"He really didn't know what to think," Weber said of Haynes. "The way it's set up (only four runners at a time), you really don't know anything by just looking at the board."
Tiger senior Brady Maska also nabbed All-American honors. Maska's toss of 56 feet 3Ôªø3รขÑ4 inches was good enough for fourth place Saturday, earning Maska his second indoor All-American honor. Maska is now a four-time All-American for the Tigers with honors in both the discus and the shot in last year's outdoor season.
"He was ranked around fifth or sixth coming in, so he was happy with his performance," Weber said of Maska, a Hays High School graduate and Barton County Community College transfer. "He really set the tone for the day. It was a great outing for our guys."
Haynes also competed in the 60-meter dash but didn't make it out of Friday's preliminaries.
The 15 points put Fort Hays in 12th place as a team.
