The Fort Hays State University volleyball team got off to a slow start Friday against Missouri Western University, losing its first set 17-25. The Tigers committed costly mistakes in the first game that gave Missouri Western the edge.

"In that first game, most of the points that Western scored were off of us. We were shanking balls and we were hitting into the net," Tiger coach Kurt Kohler said.

The Tigers were able to bounce back, though, to win the next three games for a 3-1 victory at Gross Memorial Coliseum -- behind the play of sophomore middle hitter Jenna Ulrich. Ulrich recorded 19 kills, and a 53.1 hitting percentage.

"I think the main thing was just keeping our heads. This whole week in practice we talked about never getting down and playing together and shrugging off our mistakes, and we did that. We just let that first game go and then we played to our potential.

"Our passing was there, which made the sets there, which made the kills there," she added. "It just seemed like every move was right."

The Tigers trumped Missouri Western in the second game 25-16. Fort Hays raised its hitting percentage 12 points from Game 1 to Game 2. After the second game the Tigers went on to win the next games 25-22, 25-17.

Junior Yadira Jacquez came into the match midway through the first game and added seven blocks and 13 digs for the Tigers.

"She did what she need to do to -- step in. It's nice when kids come in and contribute positively," Kohler said.

Freshman middle hitter Kylee Hoagland added 11 kills and three blocks for the Tigers.

"Our middles had a great day today." Kohler added.

Freshman Sara Hewson had 14 kills of the Tigers' 57. Junior Kayla Zoglman had 40 assists, while senior Tracie Hileman had 26 digs to lead the team.

The Tigers play at home Tuesday against Washburn University, ranked No. 5 in NCAA, Division II. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
