Tiger wrestler takes fifth

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Fort Hays State University junior wrestler James Annon capped his season with an All-American finish Saturday.
Annon (25-11) battled back through the wrestleback bracket of the NCAA Div. II National Championships, and finished in fifth place at 141 pounds. Annon fell in the first round to defending national champion Kyle Evans of University of Central Oklahoma before winning three straight matches.
A loss to Nebraska-Kearney's Jeff Rutledge, who Annon defeated earlier this season, sent the Norton native to the fifth-place match, where he defeated Travis Elg of Minnesota State University-Mankato, 6-4, for the medal.
In the 157-pound bracket, Tiger sophomore Danny Grater, one of three other national qualifiers, finished his season with a 1-2 effort in the national tourney. Grater lost in the first round to Jason Rhoten of Minnesota-Mankato by pin in the first round, then won won a match in the wrestleback bracket.
Grater's second loss was to eventual seventh-place finisher Noomis Jones of Adams State College. Grater finished 22-12.
At 174 pounds, Tiger junior Blake Malloy went 0-2 in his first national appearance. Malloy fell 6-5 in the first round, and 4-3 in the first round of the wrestleback to finish 24-10 on the year.
At 197 pounds, sophomore Tyler Gonzales also went 0-2 in his second national tournament. Gonzales lost 12-3 to Josh Ohl of Ashland University, and then 11-9 in the first round of the wrestleback. Gonzales finished 19-12.
