Tigers split first two games

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team lost 14 seniors off a 33-20 team and opened the season against San Angelo State (Tex.) University, a team coming off an appearance in the Div. II World Series and ranked No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason Div. II poll.
However, the goal for this weekend's three-game series against Angelo State remained the same: Win the series.
The Tigers put themselves in a position to do that this afternoon after they split the first two games. They won 11-1 on Friday and lost 2-1 on Saturday.
"We are not going to be happy unless we win the series," Tiger coach Rick Sabath said.
On Friday, sophomore left-hander Matt Augustine earned the win, allowing one unearned run in six innings. He struck out two and walked none. Augustine, who went 4-1 with a 6.75 ERA as a freshman, threw 90 fastballs among his 105 total pitches.
In the Tiger fourth, junior Garrett Brown hit an RBI single to tie the game and junior Dusty Washburn gave the Tigers the lead on a force play.
The Tigers followed with two runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth and four in the seventh. The game was called after seven innings.
On Saturday, Fort Hays scored its only run when Washburn homered in the second inning.He is 3-for-8 with two homers, three RBI and 10 total bases in the first two games.
