JOPLIN, Mo. -- After dropping a critical Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match Friday against Missouri Southern State University, the Fort Hays State University volleyball team's hopes of a berth in the MIAA postseason tournament are slim.
The Tigers fell 3-0 to the Lions on the road, giving Missouri Southern the tiebreaker if the Lions drop their next match. The Tigers would need that to happen, coupled with a win Saturday at home against No. 18 ranked Pittsburg State University at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Friday's game scores against the Lions were 30-26, 30-19, and 34-32. The Lions have defeated Fort Hays (15-16 overall, 2-10 MIAA) twice this season and would own the tiebreaker provided a win by Fort Hays and a loss by Missouri Southern. The Lions lost 3-1 Saturday to No. 5 ranked Washburn in Joplin.
Senior Kellyn Thaut had 23 kills in the match against Missouri Southern, hitting .404. Junior Whitney Hoffman ended the night with 38 assists. A win by the Lions (15-15, 2-10) at Pittsburg State on Wednesday would eliminate the Tigers. A loss means a Tiger win and they're in. Fort Hays has a nonconference match at Newman University on Tuesday in Wichita.
