WICHITA -- In its final nonconference match of the season, the Fort Hays State University volleyball team defeated Newman University on Tuesday, 4-1. Match scores were 30-28, 28-30, 30-21, 30-22.
Despite hitting .000 in the first game, the Tigers were able to pull out the victory in a nailbiter to get things started. The Tigers were dominant in the last two games after falling 28-30 in Game 2. Kellyn Thaut led Fort Hays (16-16) with 23 kills while senior Leanna Roberts added 16. Junior Whitney Hoffman had 45 assists. Thaut now has 552 kills for the season and ranks fourth on the all-time single season list at Fort Hays and is second best in the modern rally-scoring system.
The Tigers now face a season maker or breaker Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Fort Hays will host No. 18 Pittsburg State University at 6 p.m. for a possible berth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament. If Pittsburg State wins today at MIssouri Southern, a Tiger win Saturday would get them in. If Missouri Southern wins Wednesday, the Tigers' season ends Saturday.
