Tiger wrestlers bounce back to blank Mesa State

The 10th-ranked Fort Hays State University wrestling team bounced back to shut out Mesa State (Colo.) College Saturday afternoon after losing 29-15 to No. 8 Western (Colo.) State College the night before.
In Grand Junction on Saturday, the Tigers won their dual with Mesa State, 48-0.
Seven of the 10 weights were wrestled as the Tigers got forfeit victories at 133, 141 and 197 pounds. The Tigers won two matches by fall and three by major decision.
The Tigers put six points on the board at each of the first four weights in the event. Devin Schwartz won by fall in the 125-pound match over Jason Blasdel at 6:09. Derek Patterson and James Annon each picked up forfeit wins at 133 and 141 pounds. Mikel Delk, ranked third in Division II, won by fall at 1:40 over Jacob Masog.
Danny Grater picked up his team-leading 22nd win of the season with an 11-7 decision over Taylor Torisk at 157 pounds. Troy Lussenhop won for the Tigers at 165 pounds with a 7-6 decision over Cole Johnson.
In the final four matches, FHSU would win three by major decision. Blake Malloy won 11-3 over Andrew Laiminger at 174 pounds, Mike Howell won 15-4 over Ryan Whittington at 184 pounds, and fourth-ranked Andrew Ubben won 13-1 over Brandon Alexander at heavyweight. Tyler Gonzales won by forfeit at 197.
FHSU is now 7-5 overall, alone in third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 4-2. The loss dropped Mesa State to 2-14 overall and 1-6 in the RMAC.
On Friday, Fort Hays lost 29-15 to Western State in Gunnison, Colo..
The matches began at 157 pounds where FHSU's Danny Grater took on Neil Samples of Western State. After taking the week off last week, Grater returned to action in impressive form as he won by fall at 1:45. Grater improved to 21-8 overall.
Western State would close the gap in the next match where Troy Lussenhop of FHSU took on second-ranked Zach Lee. Lussenhop had not wrestled in a dual this season and he could not score on Lee. Lee posted a 10-0 major decision in the match, pulling the Mountaineers within two points of the Tigers.
Blake Malloy won by decision at 174 pounds over Larry Wilbanks. Malloy won the match by a 9-3 decision, moving his overall record to 14-10 this season.
Western State would take the momentum back from the Tigers in the 184-pound match where Charlie Pipher defeated FHSU's Mike Howell by a 12-4 major decision.
The 197-pound match was tight between FHSU's Tyler Gonzales and WSC's Cody Mumma. Mumma would pull the match out in overtime scoring a 2-1 win.
Andrew Ubben, ranked fourth in the heavyweight class, won by fall at 4:32 over Lars Lueders. Ubben improved to 20-5 this season.
Devin Schwartz lost at 125 pounds by a disqualification at 6:20.
At 133 pounds, Western State's Marques Bravo scored a 3-2 decision over Derek Patterson. Then at 141 pounds, the Mountaineers' Chris Freije defeated James Annon 5-3.
Camille DuPont won by fall over third-ranked Mikel Delk in the 149-pound match.
Fort Hays is at No. 1-ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Kearney, Neb.
