EDMOND, Okla. -- The Fort Hays State University football team jumped out early, then pulled away late, picking up their third win of the season, a 38-21 win at University of Central Oklahoma.
Junior quarterback Anthony Sheppard had a big day, completing 15-of-24 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and 14 rushing attempts for 93 yards and a score.
Sheppard got the Tiger started on the fourth play of the game, running 60 yards to paydirt for the game's first score.
The Tigers then added a 42-yard field goal by Tyler Kimbrough to take a 10-0 lead before Central Oklahoma (1-7) got on the board with a 2-yard run by Joshua Birmingham.
On the ensuing drive, Fort Hays (3-5) answered back with a 36-yard connection from Sheppard to Keaton Callins to put Fort Hays up 10. The Tigers then tacked on another score before halftime when Sheppard connected with a wide-open Anthony Smith over the middle for 49 yards, giving Fort Hays a 24-7 halftime advantage.
Central Oklahoma scored the third quarter's only points to narrow the margin, but back-to-back scores through the early part of the fourth quarter put the game out of reach. Edward Smith had a 10-yard score, and a 74-yard rumbling score to help FHSU snap a 2-game skid.
Edward Smith rushed for 163 yards on 14 carries, while Anthony Smith nabbed five catches for 112 yards and a score.
The Tigers are on the road Saturday, taking on Interstate-70 foe Washburn in Topeka.
