FHSU takes two

TOPEKA -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team swept a Mid-Ameria Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader against Washburn University on Tuesday, winning the opener 4-2 and taking the nightcap, 9-0.
Fort Hays (11-15 overall, 8-6 MIAA) has now won five straight games. Washburn dropped to 8-13 overall, 5-9 in the MIAA.
In Game 1, junior Eric Gilliland (2-3) pitched six scoreless innings after giving up two runs in the first.
Garrett Brown hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game, then the Tigers took the lead on Brett Becker's RBI single. Corey Gaudet hit a run-scoring double in the sixth.
Left-hander Kevin Large (2-3) returned to the rotation in the second game and pitched seven shutout innings.
Tyler Robbins, who earned MIAA Hitter of the Week honors for last week's performance, hit a two-run single in the Tigers' six-run third. Greg Bieker added a two-run triple in the inning.
