Hornets sting Tigers

EMPORIA -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team ran into a buzzsaw named Emporia State University.
After losing 14-8 to the sixth-ranked Hornets in Friday's series opener, the Tigers were swept in Saturday's doubleheader, dropping the opener 23-8 and falling in the second game, 15-5.
No. 6 Emporia State, on a 24-game winning streak, improved to 31-3 overall and 17-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Fort Hays dropped to 11-18 overall and 8-9 in the MIAA entering today's series finale.
In Saturday's opener, the Hornets scored 16 runs in the first three innings. Emporia State slugged five home runs and eight hits went for extra bases.
Former Hays High School standout Brock Nehls (6-1) pitched the first five innings to pick up the win for Emporia State.
Tiger starter Donnie Moore (1-1) allowed 13 runs, nine earned, on seven hits in 2Ôªø2âÑ3 innngs.
Kyle Stacken hit a pinch-hit three-run homer for Fort Hays.
In Game 2, Emporia State had another big inning, scoring six runs in the second. The Hornets hit four homers and had seven extra-base hits.
Former Hays Lark Keith Hernandez went 4-for-4 with seven RBIs and three runs scored for ESU. Hernandez singled, doubled and hit two home runs.
Brent Biggs, Brett Becker and Dusty Washburn all homered for the Tigers. Biggs had three hits and Washburn had two RBIs.
Eric Gilliland (2-4) took the loss, surrendering 14 hits in 4Ôªø2âÑ3 innings, giving up 13 runs, 10 earned.
In Friday's series opener, the Hornets jumped out to a 12-3 lead after six innings. Eric Shortell homered twice and drove in six runs for the Hornets. Hernandez also homered.
Greg Bieker homered, went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored for Fort Hays. Bret Fortman also homered and drove in three runs.
Matt Augustine (2-5) took the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in 3Ôªø1âÑ3 innings.
Emporia State is now three wins shy of the MIAA's all-time longest winning streak, set by University of Central Missouri.
