Tigers earn sweep of UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team swept a doubleheader from University of Central Missouri on Saturday, winning the opener 12-5 and taking the second game 5-3 over the 14th-ranked Mules.
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series was scheduled to start Friday, but that game was rained out. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today.
Brian Thompson (4-3) pitched a complete game for the Tigers in the opener, giving up five runs on nine hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.
Dusty Washburn hit a grand slam in the third inning, his 15th homer of the season. Ryan Majercik and Greg Bieker each drove in two runs for the Tigers.
In Game 2, Fort Hays took a 5-1 lead into the Mules' last at-bat. Central Missouri (28-10 overall, 17-5 MIAA) scored two runs before Garrett Huck got the final out for his first save of the season.
Chase Schippers hit a solo homer for Fort Hays, his seventh of the season. Brent Biggs drove in two runs, and Washburn and Majercik each had an RBI.
Eric Gilliland worked 8 2/3 innings to get the win. Gilliland (3-4) allowed 10 hits and one earned run, with two walks and five strikeouts.
