Fort Hays baseball team hosts Nebraska-Kearney in home opener

Going into Saturday's home opener, Fort Hays State University baseball coach Rick Sabath is looking for more pitching depth.
Sabath will get a good look at his staff, with the Tigers playing doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday against University of Nebraska-Kearney at Larks Park. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., with Sunday's games scheduled for noon.
"Pitching depth is a little bit of a concern," Sabath said.
The Tigers will throw three left-handers against the Lopers, starting with sophomore Matt Augustine in Game 1 on Saturday. Augustine (1-0) had a fine outing in his first start at a tournament in San Angelo, Texas, on Feb. 1, beating Angelo State, 11-1. Augustine worked six innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits.
"He had really good command of his fastball," Sabath said.
Going in Game 2 Saturday is junior right-hander Brian Thompson (0-1). Junior left-handers Sean Bartholomew (0-0) and Eric Gilliland (0-0) are Sunday's probable starters.
"I think there were pluses and minuses to the opening series," Sabath said. "I'm pleased with the way we swung the bats and played defense."
The Tigers will be without starting right fielder Greg Bieker indefinitely. Bieker, a sophomore from Hays who batted .455 in the opening series, hurt his knee in practice.
Another Hays product, junior first baseman Dusty Washburn, also is batting .455 and has two home runs.
