Tiger baseball drops pair Saturday

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team picked up its first road win of the season Friday but dropped two games to Missouri Southern State University on Saturday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.
On Friday, Fort Hays led 5-2 entering the eighth inning when Missouri Southern loaded the bases and picked up two runs to cut the lead to 5-4. Senior ace left-hander Eric Gilliland was charged with both runs and was lifted with no outs for junior reliever Garrett Morgan. Morgan coaxed a double play on a bunt attempt to end the inning with the bases loaded. Morgan picked up the save, his first of the season, while Gilliland improved to 4-4. Gilliland, the conference's leader in innings pitched entering the weekend, worked seven innings, his fourth straight start of at least seven innings.
Missouri Southern won both games on Saturday, 4-3 and 7-4. In the first game, Fort Hays led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth but scored a pair of runs to take the lead. Juan Hernandez, who went 5-for-6 on the day, scored the go-ahead runs on a two-run single down the left field line. Junior left-hander Matt Augustine worked 51âÑ3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Morgan (1-2) took the loss when he permitted one run in 2âÑ3 innings.
In the second game, Missouri Southern took a 4-0 lead into the sixth when Fort Hays tied the game. Sophomore catcher Ryan Majercik and junior outfielder Brennan Peterson each delivered RBi doubles and Peterson scored the tying run with two out on a wild pitch. Missouri Southern tallied three in the sixth when Jake Taylor hit a three-run triple. Senior Kent Williamson worked 52âÑ3 innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs to drop to 3-1. It was Williamson's first loss in a Fort Hays uniform after he transferred to the Tigers from Division I New Mexico State University.
Fort Hays (14-15, 6-9) and Missouri Southern (15-11, 8-5) will play one game starting today at noon.
