WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The turnaround for the Fort Hays State University baseball team continued in historic fashion this weekend. On Saturday, the Tigers became the first team to sweep two games at University of Central Missouri since 1997 with 12-5 and 5-3 victories.
Fort Hays won the first game of the Sunday doubleheader against the No. 14-ranked Mules, 8-5, and fell in the second contest 12-6.
In Game 1, Fort Hays fell behind 4-1 early but tied the game. They took the lead in the sixth before Central tied it in the bottom of the inning. Fort Hays scored three in the top of the seventh on RBIs from Tyler Robbins, Greg Bieker and Garrett Brown. Garrett Huck retired five straight batters for the win.
In Game 2, Fort Hays was down 6-0 before Bieker homered in the fifth inning. They tied the game in the sixth with five runs when Ryan Majercik, Bieker and Brown all homered. Central Missouri rallied for six runs in the seventh inning. Kevin Large (3-5) took the loss.
Fort Hays, which started the season 4-13, has won 16 of its past 25 games. Four of those losses, though, are against Emporia State University, 42-3 overall and undefeated in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
For Fort Hays, the Sunday loss ended a streak of 14 straight conference wins against MIAA teams that were not Emporia State.
With the split of the doubleheader, the Tigers are now 20-22 overall and 17-11 in the MIAA. They are in third place in the conference, two games ahead of Missouri Western State University and Missouri Southern State University. The Tigers will host Nebraska-Omaha in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday in Hays at 3:00 p.m.
