The teams they will have on the course for Monday's season openers aren't the teams Tiger golf coaches Rich Guffey and Brad Jordan envisioned.
Guffey, the women's coach, and men's coach Brad Jordan both are experiencing eligibility issues with their respective Fort Hays State University golf programs.
The Tiger women will be without freshman Chelsea Linenberger, a former golfer at Hays High School, for the Northeastern State Women's Classic, which starts Monday in Tahlequah, Okla.
"One girl didn't get her NCAA clearinghouse stuff done," Guffey said of Linenberger.
The Tiger men will be without three players -- juniors Nick Hague and Tobey Mullen and freshman Jarrett Tagtmeyer -- for Monday's season opener at the Truman Bulldog Classic in Kirksville, Mo.
"We were looking real good," Jordan said. "But we've got some transfer problems. Three guys are ineligible for this particular meet" because of the NCAA clearinghouse.
For the first meet, Jordan will have sophomore Markus Hilger at No. 1, with sophomore Aaron Mapel at No. 2 and junior Kevin Quinley at No. 3. Junior Adam Gorjiyan will be at No. 4.
"Three (golfers) are really strong," Jordan said. "The fourth guy will come from that group" of ineligible players.
Guffey will go with sophomore Samantha Nielsen at No. 1 for the opener, followed by sophomore Kiley Johansen -- who played at Hays High -- at No. 2, junior Melinda Schremmer at No. 3 and freshman Carmen Thompson at No. 4.
"In the opener, I think our returners will play pretty solid," Guffey said. "I think we should do fairly well."
