When Tigers Roared

Tiger women in first MIAA golf outing

The Fort Hays State University women's golf team has enjoyed strong success in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, including a conference championship last spring, the first women's golf title since FHSU went NCAA Division II. Today and Monday, though, the Tigers make their transition to the new Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association slate at the Nebraska-Omaha Fall Classic, the first MIAA scoring event of the season.

While nearly every FHSU team made the jump to the MIAA four years ago, women's golf is the second-to-last Tiger team to switch conferences; wrestling is the lone Tiger sport that competes in the RMAC.

"The competition right now in the MIAA is not any better I don't think than it is in the RMAC," Tiger coach Rich Guffey said.

"Regionally, for postseason play, it's going to be much more difficult because we are getting moved in with Texas and Oklahoma schools and it is going to be harder for us to qualify for postseason, I think.

"The RMAC was set up real nice," he added. "They had some mandatory tournaments, kind of made scheduling easy. There were 10 teams, so it was kind of fun in that regard, but I think the MIAA is going to get there. It will be nice to play some new venues, I think, build some new rivalries."

Fort Hays has not seen an MIAA team at any of its first three tournaments, including its home tournament Monday and Tuesday. The Tigers won the three-team tourney, while sophomore Kiley Johansen took home medalist honors with a 78-79. The 78 marked her career best.

Johansen has now won two tournaments in two years after she won two in four years (including a Western Athletic Conference title) at Hays High School.

Johansen has been the Tigers' No. 1 golfer at the past two tournaments. Sophomore Samantha Nielsen, last season's RMAC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year, led the Tigers in their first tournament before ranking second to Johansen.

"I think me and Sam are pretty comparable," Johansen said. "If one is where I play, fine, but if two is where I play, great. I would like to (play one) just so I would be playing well, but I would also love it if Sam played one and then I played one and we were competing for it and then we are both playing good and then the team is playing well."
