Eaton tied FHSU softball single game RBI record

2/9/2009

By The Hays Daily News

DENVER -- First-year coach Julie LeMaire predicted before the season started senior shortstop Alex Eaton -- who batted .189 in a part-time role last year -- would surprise people this spring.

If Sunday's perfomance is any indication, LeMaire's hunch could pay off.

Eaton hit two home runs and drove in a career-high seven runs as the Fort Hays State University softball team improved to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Metropolitan State College of Denver. The Tigers held on to win the first game 4-3, then Eaton powered Fort Hays to a 12-7 win in Game 2.

Eaton's seven RBIs tied the school's single-game record since the program was reinstated in 1999.

Robin Blecha also had seven RBIs in a game in 1999. Statistics from previous seasons, when Fort Hays played before the program was discontinued in the mid-1980s, are not available.

Eaton hit a two-run single in the first inning, followed by a three-run homer in the third and a two-run shot in the fourth.

Tiger senior third baseman Hallie McMillen added three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Junior right-hander Adrian Mohr pitched a complete game to get the win. Mohr (2-0) allowed seven runs on eight hits, with four walks and three strikeouts. Mohr also singled and doubled, drove in a run and scored a run.

In the opener, Fort Hays took a 4-0 lead into the Roadrunners' last at-bat. Sophomore left-hander Kayla Rupa allowed a three-run homer with two outs to spoil the shutout, but got the complete game. Rupa (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The Tigers scored a run in the third on Rupa's RBI groundout.

In the fourth, two runs scored when Eaton reached base on an error. In the seventh, sophomore Sara Tani reached on an error with one out, scoring a runner from third.

Fort Hays will be in San Angelo, Texas, this weekend for six games in three days.
