FHSU softball finish 2-4 at tournament

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Tiger senior shortstop Alex Eaton made the all-tournament team for the Fort Hays State University softball squad at the Blue and Gold Classic hosted by Angelo State.

Fort Hays split a pair of games both Friday and Saturday before losing twice on Sunday to finish 2-4 at the tournament. The Tigers are now 6-4 entering Tuesday's home opener, a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Bethany College at Tiger Stadium.

Eaton batted .591 (13-of-22) with three RBIs and five runs scored. She also was 3-of-3 on stolen base attempts.

In Sunday's games, Fort Hays lost 10-8 to West Texas A&M and 8-3 to Southwestern Oklahoma State. On Saturday, the Tigers claimed a 9-4 win over Texas-Permian Basin and lost 12-9 to Incarnate Word.

In the win over Texas-Permian Basin, Chelsea Luther hit a solo homer in the second, then the Tigers took a 4-1 lead in the third. Adrian Mohr tripled in one run, followed by RBI singles from Hallie McMillen and Erin Kinsey.

Texas-Permian Basin tied the game again, but Fort Hays scored five in the sixth to take the lead for good. Kayla Rupa broke the tie with an RBI double, then Sara Tani followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Mohr hit a two-run a double and McMillen followed with a run-scoring single.

Mohr (4-0) pitched a complete game for the victory, giving up six hits with three strikeouts.

Against Incarnate Word, th Tigers allowed eight runs in the first two innings and couldn't catch up.

The Tigers got as close as 9-8 in the sixth on a two-run homer by Cortney Brown. But the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Rupa allowed eight runs on seven hits to take the loss. She pitched 11/3 innings before being replaced by Kinsey, who allowed four runs on eight hits in 42/3 innings.

McMillen had two hits and three RBIs for the Tigers.

In Sunday's first game, the Tigers scored six runs in the first against West Texas A&M, but couldn't keep the lead. The Tigers scored in the inning when McMillen was hit with the bases loaded to force in the first run, Brown followed with a two-run double, Eaton hit an RBI single, a wild pitch scored another, followed by a squeeze bunt by Kinsey.

West Texas A&M took the lead with five runs in the fourth to make it 8-7.

The Tigers tied it in the top of the fifth on Rupa's RBI single. Kinsley (0-1), pitching in relief of starter Mohr, allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mohr allowed eight runs on eight hits in 31/3 innings. Kinsey gave up two runs in 22/3 innings.

In the Tigers' final game of the tournament, they took a 2-0 lead, but Southwestern Oklahoma State scored five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Lauren Duran led off the Tiger third with a triple and scored on Brown's double. Eaton followed with an RBI single.

Rupa made that stand until the sixth, when Southwestern Oklahoma State hit five consecutive singles followed by a double for its five runs. Rupa (2-3) allowed eight runs on 12 hits in pitching a complete game.

Eaton had three hits with an RBI and run scored for the Tigers.
