FHSU softball ends season at MIAA tourney

OVERLAND PARK -- The Fort Hays State University softball team's season came to an end Saturday in the losers' bracket of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.
The Tigers lost 9-2 to Emporia State University to end their season at 31-33. Emporia State (40-14) advanced to today's noon championship game against University of Nebraska-Omaha (43-13). If the Hornets win, a second game will follow.
Fort Hays lost its tourney opener Friday, falling 8-4 against top seed University of Central Missouri, despite knocking out its ace pitcher, senior left-hander Megan Leonard. The Tigers stayed alive with an 8-2 win over Pittsburg State University later in the day.
Against Emporia State, the Tigers trailed 5-2 before the Hornets scored four in the sixth. Junior right-hander Adrian Mohr (13-13) took the loss, giving up two runs -- one earned -- in four innings. Sophomore left-hander Kayla Rupa entered in the fifth and allowed seven runs on seven hits over the final three innings.
The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth on a two-out error with runners on second and third.
In the tourney opener, the Tigers broke a 1-1 tie on freshman Rachel Gemmill's three-run double off Leonard in the fifth. But Central Missouri answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. The Jennies added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Mohr took the loss, allowing six runs -- none earned -- in five innings. Junior Kristal Holland (8-4) got the win in relief of Leonard, who surrendered four runs in 42รขÑ3 innings.
In the win over Pittsburg State, the Tigers scored four runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Pittsburg State got a run back in the top of the fourth, but Fort Hays scored twice in the home half of the inning.
Freshman Cortney Brown homered and finished with four RBIs. Eaton added a two-run homer and Mohr belted a two-run double.
Rupa (17-18) pitched her 28th complete game for the victory, scattering eight hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Tigers honored by MIAA
Sophomore outfielder Sara Tani made the first team of the all-MIAA squad announced on Friday. Entering the tourney, Tani's 76 hits were the most by an MIAA player this season, and she was second in hits per game (1.29) while batting .349 to lead the Tigers.
Eaton was the second-team shortstop, while the Tigers had three players earn honorable mention recognition -- Rupa at pitcher, Brown at catcher and senior Hallie McMillen at third base.
