MARYVILLE, Mo. ¬-- Senior Emily Herl set a school record and freshman Kayla Rupa nearly had a no-hitter in the Fort Hays State University softball team's road split against Northwest Missouri State University on Monday. Fort Hays won rthe opener 4-2 and lost the second game 5-2.
Herl led off Game 2 with her second homer of the season and the 19th of her career. She hit her record-breaking 20th with a solo shot in the fifth inning. Herl's homers broke Suzanne Kerr's record of 19 homers hit from 1999-00.
Fort Hays has incomplete records for softball before it disbanded in the 1980s. Records are from when the program resumed in 1999.
Sophomore Jessica Hamilton (4-5) took the loss in Game 2, allowing four runs.
In Game 1, Rupa came within one strike of a no-hitter. She hadn't allowed a hit until two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh, when Northwest's Megan Simpson singled back up the middle. Kaila Ballard followed with a two-run homer that cut the Tigers' lead in half. Rupa, though, struck out the next batter, her 13th of the game. Rupa's 13 strikeouts set a new season high and the win bumped her record to 10-7. The 10 wins tie her for 10th all-time on the FHSU single-season list, since 1999.
Senior Anna Herl homered in Game 1, her ninth homer of the season. She moved into fifth place on the Tigers' all-time single-season list.
With the split, Fort Hays is now 26-20 overall and 5-7 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Northwest Missouri State is 22-15 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays returns to action today for another MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Tigers are home Wednesday against Newman University at Tiger Stadium.
