SHAWNEE-- The Fort Hays State University softball team, the No. 8 seed in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association postseason conference tournament, went 1-1 before ran suspended their third game.
In Game 1, the Tigers lost 11-0 to No. 1 seed and regular season conference champions Emporia State University. Then, they defeated No. 4 seed Pittsburg State University, a team that swept them in the final games of the regular season, 6-0. Fort Hays was up 1-0 against Missouri Western in the top of the fourth inning before the game was suspended.
In the Game 1 loss, Emporia hit four homers and Tiger senior starting pitcher Emily Rockefeller lasted only 1/3 inning after six consecutive batters reached base in the first inning.
In Game 2, the Tigers pounded out 13 hits and scored six runs for freshman starter Kayla Rupa. Rupa moved to 13-10 and threw a one-hit shutout. Rupa, who retired the final 17 batters, is tied for third on the all-time single season wins list in Tiger history.
Junior Hallie McMillen delivered a three-run double and Terra Fraser hit a two-run homer.
Fort Hays (31-25 overall) is scheduled to resume their game against Missouri Western at noon today. The championship round has been moved back to Saturday because of the conditions.
