Fort Hays State University women's tennis coach Brian Flax said earlier this week his team showed a few signs of rust in its spring opening 6-3 win over Hastings (Neb.) College.
Up until this week, the Tigers had not been able to be on the court and had a dual canceled because of bad weather.
Starting today with a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual with Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., the Tigers will be busy.
Today's dual begins a three-day MIAA road trip. The Tigers will take on the Bearcats, Missouri Western State Univesity in St. Joseph, Mo., on Saturday, and Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., on Sunday.
The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the ITA North Central Region with a 6-1 record, finished the fall with just a loss to Mesa State (Colo.) College in Lakewood, Colo., but came away with Division II wins over former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes Metropolitan State College of Denver and Colorado Christian University.
In today's dual to open the MIAA season, the Tigers were to take on a Northwest Missouri State squad which went 4-2 in MIAA play last season and is ranked No. 6 in the region. Southwest Baptist is ranked No. 2 in the region behind Emporia State University.
The Tigers' first home dual of the spring is against Colorado Christian on March 28. It is the first of four home dates for the Tigers as they will also face Washburn University, Emporia State and Truman State (Mo.) University in MIAA play at home.
Junior singles player Brette Baldwin stared the spring with a 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 10-7 win in Hastings to move to 5-2 on the year and has the third most wins of any Tiger singles player heading into the spring. Senior Kris Marten played at No. 4 in Hastings, claiming a 6-2, 6-1 win to move to 8-1 on the year and 7-0 in duals.
Sophomore Mary Kate McKee improved her record to 7-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 to open the spring. The Tigers also claimed a pair of doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 with Baldwin teaming up with junior Samantha Islas at No. 1 and Marten and McKee teaming up at No. 3. Together, Baldwin and Islas are 5-3, while Marten McKee are 5-2 in doubles action.
