When Tigers Roared

Haynes at nationals

Bryan Haynes has carved out an impressive sprinting career at Fort Hays State University after he transferred from Div. I University of Massachuetts.

"I think he is definitely in the top three (sprinters ever)," Tiger head track and field coch Dennis Weber said.

Haynes has a chance to add to a sterling resume this weekend at the NCAA Division II national championships this weekend in Houston. Haynes is the only Tiger to qualify and will compete in the 60 and 200 meters. Haynes is the defending national champion in the 200 meters.

In the indoor season, Haynes was the High Point athlete at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association indoor championships with 26 points. He won the conference title in the 200 meters in 21.78 seconds, the exact same time he had to capture the national championship last year. He was second in the 60 meters (6.84 seconds) and also earned South Central Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.

Last season, Haynes entered the national competition with tight hamstrings and thought they would tear when he ran at nationals. Haynes, though, made it through the finals and earned the championship, the first indoor sprinting title since Maisha Prewitt earned the 60-meter hurdles crown in 2002.

The hamstrings bothered him all spring. After Haynes played football for the Tigers in the fall, the pain has gone away.

"He is having no problems," Weber said. "It's almost like he doesn't know how to run without pain because he had it for so long."

Haynes is seeded 13th of 13 qualifiers in the 60 meter dash with a season-best time of 6.81 seconds. He is ranked ninth in the 200 meters in 21.78. The 200-meter features all 13 runners within .24 seconds.

"It's a very close field," Weber said.
