At the indoor NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, Fort Hays State University junior Bryan Haynes entered as the defending national champion in the 200 meters. Haynes felt pressure before the race and didn't make the finals. He had to settle for All-American honors in the 60 meters.
"Just have a lot of maturity and growing up to do which is fine with me," he said. "It got to me a little bit and I just tightened up. Basically, you have to have confidence. We got out too fast in the first part of the race and I just tightened up. Just one of those things where I have to run my race and no one else's."
The subpar result has made Haynes more focused for the outdoor season in possibly his final year of college athletics.
"Lit a little fire under me and I am ready to go this season," he said.
Haynes, a former Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association all-conference kick returner for the Tiger football team, could be competing in his final track season. Haynes' football eligibility has been completed, but he could have another year of track if he appeals to the NCAA and wants to run again.
Haynes, though, would like to post a stronger outdoor year than indoor. He started off with two wins in the season-opening Alex Francis Classic at Fort Hays last Sunday. Haynes, the South Central Regional indoor track athlete of the year, won the 100 (10.49) and 200 (21.22) and was on the second-place 400-meter relay. Haynes earned the conference's Male Athlete of the Week award. The 100 time was a provisional mark for nationals.
"It is the first track meet, so basically just wanted to establish a good team base," he said.
Haynes and the Tigers will compete this weekend at the PSU-UCM-FHSU Triangular at Pittsburg State University on Saturday.
"Definitely working more the hamstrings and getting those strengthened up, just working on mechanics, run a complete 100 and run a complete 200," Haynes said. "Definitely get All-American, if not win the whole thing."
The women have been led by junior Darcie Schmitz, who competed in her first collegiate meet as a Tiger last weekend. Schmitz, who missed the indoor season after she transferred from Cloud County Community College, won the long jump (18-10), triple jump (38-2) and 100 meters (12.43) and earned the conference's women's track athlete of the week honor.
