Tiger women win meet

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Led by junior Darcie Schmitz and sophomore Kelsey Martin, the Fort Hays State University women's track and field team won the Loper Twilight at the University of Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday. Fort Hays tallied 211 points, while UNK had 166 in the four-team event that also included Hastings (Neb.) College and Chadron State (Col.) College.
Martin won the 100-meter hurdles (14.53), finished second in the 200 meters (25.44) and long jump (18-5 3/4). Schmitz won the 100 meters (12.32) and triple jump (37-3 1/4) and finished third in the long jump (18-5 1/4). Senior Lindsay Miller finished first in the 400-meter hurdles (65.18) and freshman Morgan Witzel won the high jump (5-1 1/4). Junior Christa Bergmann was first in the hammer throw (162-4) while freshman Abby Rowland was second in the pole vault (11-3 3/4) to her coach Casey Jo Wanger. Wanger, the Tigers' record holder in the pole vault, competed unattached and won with a vault of 11-113รขÑ4.
The Tiger men took second with 150.5 points, just two points behind Kearney. Junior Bryan Haynes won the 200 meters (21.23) and finished second to Tiger junior Andrew Smith in the 400. Haynes ran 49.2, while Smith finished in 49.08. Senior Aaron Yoder won the 1,500-meters (4:11.04) and senior Elias Diaz won the 3,000 meters (9:08.31).
