Fort Hays track sets records

KEARNEY, Neb. -- It was a record-setting day for the Fort Hays State University track and field team at the Loper Twilight.

The Tiger men's and women's teams combined for 13 first-place finishes and set seven new meet records.

Fort Hays took first place on both the men's and women's side. The Tiger men scored 216Ôªø1âÑ2 points, with Hastings (Neb.) College second with 117 1.2. The Tiger women scored 211Ôªø1âÑ2 points, with runner-up Hastings scoring 125Ôªø1âÑ2.

On the men's side, Brady Maska set an NCAA Division II automatic mark of 199 feet, 1 inch in the hammer throw and another automatic mark in the discus (177-1), both meet records.

Other meet records on the men's side were by Garrett Edgar in the javelin (201âÑ2) and Bryan Haynes in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.43 seconds. Both were NCAA II provisional marks. Haynes also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.85 seconds.

Other first-place finishers for the Tigers were Andrew Smith, who won the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.19 seconds and Edwin Kiptoo, who won the 800-meter run (1:56.06).

For the Tiger women, Lindsay McCormick set an NCAA II provisional mark in the javelin (137-11), a new meet record. Brooke Hobbs won the 400-meter dash with a new meet record time of 58.66 seconds.

Also setting a new meet record was the first-place women's 400-meter relay team of ShaRonda Law, Megan McClain, Lauren Nichols and Brooke Hobbs, who finished in 49.22 seconds.

Other first-place winners included Lauren Nichols in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.03 seconds, Nikki Knowles in the 1,500-meter run (4:54.05) and Amanda Mondt in the triple jump with a distance of 34-2.

Fort Hays will host the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Multis on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lewis Field Stadium. The two-day event will conclude on Monday.
