Tigers fare well at meet

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Fort Hays State University men's and women's track and field teams competed Thursday in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Twilight Open.
The Tiger men came away with 10 top-3 finishes, with two individual titles. Senior sprinter David Quillin won the men's 400-meter dash in a time of 48.17 seconds, just ahead of Taylor Redinger of Hastings (Neb.) College. Redinger, a Phillipsburg native, ran 48.89 for second place.
Quillin finished second in the 200-meter dash in 22.25, just behind Mike Smith of Chadron State (Neb.) College.
Tiger junior Kyle Jilka won the javelin, throwing 197 feet, 9 inches. Freshman teammate Garett Edgar threw 195-10 for second place. Junior Brady Maska had a good day in the throws, taking away two runner-up finishes behind the University of Nebraska-Kearney's Dane Tobey. Maska took silver in both the shot put (54-1 3/4) and the discus (174-6).
Juniors Elias Diaz and Aaron Davidson were second and third, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. Diaz finished in 15:46.37, while Davidson came in at 15:58.11. Sophomore Dylan Bathurst (14-9) and freshman Jordan Ungles (14-3 1/4) were 1-2 in the pole vault.
On the women's side, the Tigers claimed eight top-3 finishes. Senior Amanda Poore continued her winning ways in the high jump, clearing 5-4Ôªø1Ñ2 for the gold. Three other jumpers made the same height.
Senior Casey Wanger came away with a second-place finish in the pole vault at 11-2Ôªø1Ñ2. Doane College's Erin Shafer cleared 11-8Ôªø1Ñ2 for the gold.
Junior Crystal Harden took second in the triple jump (39-2 1/4) and was third in the long jump (17-11 1/2).
Tiger junior Lindsay McCormick was second in the javelin with a toss of 132-9.
The Tigers will host the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships on May 5-6 at Lewis Field Stadium.
