The Fort Hays State University track and field teams could win several titles this weekend at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association outdoor track and field championships at Northwest Missouri State University.
The Tigers, led by senior Brady Maska and sophomore Bryan Haynes, could even contend for a the team conference championship.
Maska, a four-time All-American and the prohibitive favorite to win the discus national championship this spring, won the shot put and discus titles at the MIAA outdoor meet last spring. This year, he could capture all three throwing titles, events he has won with regularity throughout the season.
Maska is seventh in the shot put with a throw of 17.21 meters, according to national results at trackshark.com. No MIAA thrower is better than 10th.
In the discus, Maska ranks third (54.50m). Pittsburg State University's Braden Hayes, who has thrown against Maska in several competitions this season, is sixth in the country.
Maska ranks third in the hammer throw with a toss of 60.68 meters and will have strong competition from University of Central Missouri. The Mules' have two of the top five hammer throwers in the country with Dan Raithel and Drew Frizzell.
Fort Hays, though, could go 1-2-3 in the javelin, a finish it had at several meets this season. Garrett Edgar, Kyle Jilka and Adam Capps all rank between 10 and 15 in the country in Div. II.
Haynes, the 200-meter indoor national champion, ranks second in the country in the 100 meters (10.41) and fourth in the 200 (21.13). Northwest Missouri State's John Miles and Emporia State University's Kenton Lonberger will contend with Haynes.
On the women's side, sophomore Lindsay McCormick and freshman Kendra Matteson are both ranked nationally in the javelin and could finish 1-2 this weekend.
Last season, the first that Fort Hays competed in the MIAA, both Tiger squads took sixth. Ten men and ten women apiece earned all-conference honors.
