Schmitz notches career best for FHSU

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Darcie Schmitz is an All-American.
Schmitz, a junior on the Fort Hays State University track and field team, finished fourth in the long jump Thursday at the NCAA Division II Championships. She saved her career best for her final attempt in the finals, leaping 19 feet, 11 inches, and in the process breaking the school record of 19-8 1/2, set by Maisha Prewitt in 2000.
Schmitz was in eighth place until her final jump. She also was an NJCAA All-American at Cloud County Community College in both the long jump and triple jump. She will go in the triple jump today.
Also competing Thursday were junior sprinter Bryan Haynes and sophomore Tim McElroy in the hammer throw. Haynes finished seventh in the 100-meter dash prelims in a time of 10.44 seconds. He will run in the finals on Saturday. Haynes will run in the 200-meter dash prelims today. McElroy finished 12th in the hammer throw (185-8).
Senior Lindsay McCormick and sophomore Amy Wilson will compete in the women's javelin on Saturday.
