Tiger volleyball begins season 0-4

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Tiger volleyball team left here winless to start the Kurt Kohler era.
Fort Hays State University lost two matches Friday and two more Saturday at the Best Western/Runza Fall Classic.
The Tigers lost 3-1 to Newman University (23-25, 25-21, 25-15 25-23), then lost 3-0 to Rockhurst (Mo.) University (25-19, 25-20, 25-23).
On Saturday, the Tigers fell 3-0 to Bemidji (Minn.) State (25-23, 25-17, 25-22), then lost 3-0 to host University of Nebraska-Kearney (25-14, 25-15, 25-11), ranked sixth in he nation in NCAA Division II.
Fort Hays won its first game of the season in the opening match with Newman, but didn't win another game the rest of the weekend.
Against Newman, senior Lilian Rezende led the Tigers in kills with 17, and junior Whitney Liggett added a career-high 28 assists and tied her career high in service aces with three. Senior Ellen Dreyer finished with 14 digs to lead the Tigers.
Against Rockhurst, Rezende and senior Lydia Karnopp each had 11 kills. Liggett had a team-high 21 assists. Sophomore Tracie Hileman led the Tigers in digs with 16.
On Saturday against Bemidji State, Rezende led the Tigers in kills with nine, with 10 hitting errors. Sophomore Lindsey Larson added a team-high 13 assists and Hileman led in digs with 14.
Against the rival Lopers, Rezende had 10 kills, Liggett had 16 assists and Hileman added 12 digs.
Fort Hays will be at the Eastern New Mexico University Tournament in Portales, N.M., on Friday and Saturday.
