WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Tiger women were winless in road games this season entering Monday night's contest at University of Central Missouri.
The winless streak stretched to nine straight games with the Fort Hays State University women's basketball team's 73-63 loss in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.
The Tigers were hurt by Sheena Kuntzsch's foul trouble. The senior guard scored two points on 1-of-2 shooting in 12 minutes of action before fouling out.
"When our seniors play well, we play well," Fort Hays coach Annette Wiles said on her postgame radio show. "Hopefully, Sheena can bounce back."
Fort Hays was whistled for 26 fouls compared to 17 for Central Missouri (11-11 overall, 6-7 MIAA). The Jennies were 28-of-34 at the foul line, while the Tigers shot 15 free throws and made 11.
"That's part of being out on the road and overcoming adversity," Wiles said.
The Tigers also were hurt by turnovers, committing 26 on the night.
"I thing the turnovers -- time and time again ... come down to being tough with the basketball," Wiles said.
The Tigers, who have lost four straight, are fighting for a berth in the conference's postseason tournament. Fort Hays plays host to Missouri Western in a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
"The game Saturday is going to be an extremely important ball game," Wiles said.
In Monday's game, Central Missouri went on a 10-2 run late in the first half to take a seven-point lead before Fort Hays got a late bucket to cut the deficit to 28-23 at halftime.
The Tigers were leading 45-43 in the second half before the Mules went on an 18-14 run to take a 61-49 lead.
Fort Hays (9-13, 3-10) used a 6-0 run to get within 61-55 with just over two minutes remaining, but with the score 64-58, a 3-pointer by Lindsey Maple with 1:36 left gave the Jennies a 67-58 lead.
Sophomore guard Kayla Klug led Fort Hays with 15 points despite playing two nights after being hit hard in the face at Missouri Southern.
"She still wasn't herself tonight," said Wiles, who liked Klug's gritty play.
Senior forward Brianna Willhite scored 12 points and sophomore forward Raychel Boling added 10 off the bench. It was the second straight game in double figures for Boling after going 33 consecutive games without scoring in double digits.
"I thought Raychel Boling really stepped up," Wiles said.
Central Missouri placed five players in double figures, led by 20 points from Maple.
