Tiger women move to 5-0

11/29/2009

By The Hays Daily News

GOLDEN, Colo. -- In the preseason, second-year Fort Hays State University women's basketball coach Tony Hobson had a prediction.

"I think we will be a better road team because of a couple reasons," Hobson said. "We have a lot more experience than we had last year and experience with me in what we were doing. And we have a lot more depth. Foul trouble is not going to be as big of a deal as it was last year. If you have Erica (Biel) in foul trouble last year, you don't score inside. This year, we have got a couple more options."

Through five contests, the Tigers' improvements have helped FHSU already better its road/neutral court record from 2008-09. Last season, Fort Hays finished 12-16 overall, including 2-11 in road/neutral games. This weekend, Fort Hays moved to 3-0 in road/neutral contests when they won the Colorado School of Mines Thanksgiving Classic. On Friday, Fort Hays never trailed in a 56-47 victory over host Colorado Mines. The Tigers opened the game on an 8-0 run before Mines tied the contest at 16. FHSU countered with a 10-0 run and led the rest of the contest. Senior Naomi Bancroft paced Fort Hays with 19 points. Four players picked up six points, including seniors Biel and Audra Binford. Junior Shelby Hillman and Kara McFarland, both transfers, also scored six points. Brecca Gaffney led Mines with 14 points.

On Saturday, Fort Hays defeated Regis (Col.) University 60-51 to move to 5-0. The Tigers are 5-0 for the first time since 2006-07 and the second time since 1969.
