Malloy, Edgmon take first for Tiger wrestlers

The Fort Hays State University wrestling team had seven wrestlers place at the annual FHSU/Bob Smith Open on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Tommy Edgmon won at 125 pound, beating teammate Dustin Dooley by a 3-0 decision in the finals. Edgmon finished the tournament at 5-0 in his first action of the season. Dooley went 4-1.

Blake Malloy was the winner at 165 pounds, wrestling unattached. Malloy, who is redshirting this season, went 4-0 to reach the championship match.

James Annon took second in the 141-pound bracket. Annon, who is ranked second in the nation, lost in the finals to Jon Burns of NCAA Division I University of Nebraska, 11-5.

Danny Grater, ranked fourth in the nation at 157 pounds, reached the championship match. He lost in overtime by sudden victory to Chase Walker of Mesa State (Colo.) College.

Shawn Kuhlman won four matches in a row at 174, which included wins over two seeded wrestlers.

The top seed, Kamarudeen Usman of Nebraska-Kearney, defeated Kuhlman for the championship by a 14-8 decision.

Levi Younkin finished fourth at 149 pounds. He went 5-2 for the tournament.

The Tigers had three wrestlers finish one match short of placing. Those wrestlers were Travis Kuhn at 133 pounds, Cody Gillespie at 174 pounds and Tyler Gonzales at 184 pounds.

Usman of Nebraska-Kearney was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Heavyweight Dustin Finn of Central Oklahoma won the most falls with fastest time award for the tournament.
