Fort Hays State University senior wrestler Chance Rencountre has been charged with one felony count of aggravated battery and has been suspended from the Tiger wrestling program indefinitely, coach Chas Thompson confirmed this morning.
"The chances of him coming back aren't looking too bright," Thompson said.
Rencountre, a Pawhuska, Okla., native and one of the Tigers' three seniors, is due in court Dec. 21. The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Sept. 18 near a residence in the 400 block of Elm, according to the Hays Police Department's offense report. The complaint stated that Rencountre, 23, is accused of repeatedly punching a FHSU student "in the face, breaking his jaw in two places, requiring surgery to repair."
"He has not been found guilty yet," Thompson said. "Obviously, we did some investigating ourselves and had determined there was an incident that happened. It's in the law's hands now. He is not going to be part of our team. It's his senior year, the last semester of his career. It's an unfortunate thing."
Rencountre, who wrestles at 174 pounds, joined the Tiger program last year from Labette Community College after he earned NJCAA All-American honors. He compiled a 21-8 record for the Tigers last season and reached the national rankings before a knee injury kept him from qualifying for the national tournament. He was named to the preseason all-RMAC team, and was 1-1 this year. Thompson is uncertain who will fill Rencountre's position.
"Fighting is not condoned at Fort Hays State, especially with an athlete, and he did," Thompson said.
"He is accepting his responsibility. It's just a tough situation."
